Pierre Schryer, fiddle
This school program features Pierre Schryer, Canadian Fiddling Champion, and Martine Billette,
step dancer, in concert with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. Together they will look at folk
influences on classical music and share their joy for music with this young audience,
performing French Canadian and Scottish Reels. Pierre truly captivates young audiences
with his energy, genuine warmth and ability to play in any style from Irish to Scottish and
Quebecois to Appalachian.
Grade 7 & 8
Students in grades in 7 & 8 will be invited to attend a brief portion of a Pops series dress rehearsal and are then taken on a guided tour of the careers that make it all happen. From learning what the conductor does to what the usher does, this program gives students a glimpse of at least ten distinct jobs, such as:
Conductor, Musician, Stage Hand, Sound Engineer, Lighting Technician, House Manager,
Operations Manager, Marketing Director or Librarian.
During the tour, students can interact with each of these specialists, listen to them describe their
jobs and ask them questions. Prior to their visit, the class will receive supplementary materials with
information about the KWS, the concert hall and all the people involved.

High School
This program gives selected high school students an opportunity to
work side-by-side with KWS staff to produce a concert. From the
initial programming through to the final concert itself, the students
gain hands-on experience in the artistic, marketing and
production aspects. KWS staff will work closely with the students
as they go through the planning stages, watch rehearsals, produce
marketing materials and see their concert come to life.
Starting early in the fall, the program will include 5 monthly planning visits where the students come in to work with KWS staff. They will also attend portions of the
orchestra rehearsal.
The program concludes with a special public concert presented by the students and a post-concert reception celebrating their achievement.
