traditional Chinese instruments, untraditional music free This group of four virtuosic female musicians perform on the zheng (long zither), pipa (pear shape lute), sanxian (fretless long necked lute), ruan (a moon shape lute) and liuqin (small pear shape lute). The quartet’s repertoire from AD 917 to the present day, incorporating string band music from a host of world cultures, from traditional Chinese to Bluegrass, Balkan and Gypsy Jazz. Red Chamber’s program features world premieres by Canadian composer Moshe Danburg and Farshid Samandari as well as John Cage’s 'Three Dances' arranged by John Oliver whose own Dream of Africa is an energetic piece with African rhythm.
