Safa
Contemporary and neo-traditional Persian improv
free
A smash hit at our 2007 festival, this Vancouver improvisatory trio is inspired by a profound passion for traditional Persian repertoire. Comprised of percussion virtuoso, Sal Ferraras, Quebecois virtuoso clarinetis, Francois Houle, and Amir Koushakni on Setar, Tar, and vocals, Safa perform works both improvised and composed, some connected to Turkish and Judeo-Arabic traditions, but most spring from the moods and feelings of Persian music. Their performances touch the soul, propel flights of fantasy, and inspire thought even as they unfold contemporary improvisations and neo-traditional settings in rhythmic play and timbral contrasts.
