Baroque & Beyond Begins With Two Exceptional Programs

The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony opens the 2016/17 Baroque & Beyond Series in October with Haydn & Ravel in Waterloo on Wednesday, October 5 at 8 pm at First United Church.  Then, in November, the KWS presents a Czech focused program with An Evening in Prague on Wednesday, November 9 at 8 pm at First United Church.  Both concerts will also be presented in Guelph and Cambridge.

Haydn & Ravel, led by guest conductor and curator Christopher Rountree, features two humourous works, Haydn’s Symphony No. 102 and Farina’s Capriccio Stragavante for strings. Ravel’s miniature masterpiece, Le tombeau de Couperin, is also featured, and is a tribute to the Baroque master Couperin. Roundtree is an American conductor who is known for his lively conducting style and as founder of the LA chamber group ‘wild Up,’ an ensemble that blends new music with classical repertoire, performance art and pop.

An Evening in Prague pays tribute to the great city of Prague with three exceptional Czech composers: Zelenka, Smetana and Dvořák.  The works, written in the city itself, include Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings, Smetana’s Fanfares for Shakespeare’s Richard III, and Zelenka’s Overture à 7 concertanti in F major. Also featured is Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik, which was written with Prague on the composer’s mind!

Tickets for all concerts are $36 for adults and $15 for students and can be purchased online at kwsymphony.ca or by calling 519-745-4711 or 888-745-4717.
