The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony goes Behind the Scenes of the Figure Skating world with Canadian Superstar Kurt Browning
Guest Conductor Lucas Waldin opens the 2016/17 Pops Series with Canadian skating superstar Kurt Browning as host for a program of the music from skating’s most memorable routines on September 23 & 24 at 8 pm at Centre In The Square. Also featuring the vocal talents of Geoffrey Tyler, this concert will include projected footage and images from unforgettable skating routines, with music from Phantom of the Opera, Casablanca and Singin’ in the Rain, along with popular classics such as Bizet’s Carmen and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.
Canadian figure skating icon Kurt Browning hosts the evening. A 4-time World Champion, 4-time Canadian Champion and 3-time Olympian, Browning is also known for choreography and commentary. He will take audiences on a journey behind-the-scenes of the figure skating world as only a previous champion can. Joining him onstage is the multitalented performer Geoffrey Tyler, who has worked across Canada as an actor, singer and dancer, and has been working as a figure skating performance coach and choreographer, working extensively with Kurt Browning.
Leading the orchestra is dynamic Canadian conductor Lucas Waldin. A favourite of KWS audiences, Waldin is currently Artist-in-Residence and Community Ambassador for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared with the KWS several times, most recently on the 2015/16 Season for ‘KWS By Request.’
“Canadian icon and entertainer extraordinaire Kurt Browning hosts this unique exploration of figure skating’s greatest hits,” commented Waldin. “The KWS will perform a variety of favourites used in figure skating throughout the years – everything Bolero to ABBA – while audience members relive the legendary routines of past and present through Kurt’s colourful introductions and figure skating footage projected above the orchestra. Musical theatre star Geoffrey Tyler brings an additional sparkle to the evening as he makes his KWS debut performing a selection of songs that Kurt has memorably skated to over the years, including What a Wonderful World and Singin’ in the Rain.”
SKATING’S GREATEST HITS runs Sept 23 & 24 at 8 pm at the Centre In the Square, 101 Queen St. N. in Kitchener. Tickets can be purchased online at kwsymphony.ca or by calling 519-745-4711 or 888-745-4717.
