The audience picks the music in Live by Request—the interactive voting concert

The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony gives the power to the audience in their first ever interactive voting concert with Live by Request on January 20 and January 21 at 8 pm at Centre In The Square. Led by KWS favourite John Morris Russell, the concert features orchestral hits chosen by the audience in real time using their smartphones. The program includes everything from waltzes and sing-alongs, to Hollywood blockbusters and rousing finales!

After a successful premiere at the Boston Pops, the Live by Request concept will bring a fun and interactive experience to Kitchener-Waterloo. Audience members will vote through an app on their smartphones and the results will be displayed on the big screen above the Orchestra in real time.

John Morris Russell is a favourite on the KWS Pops Series. Russell is currently in his sixth season as conductor of the Cincinnati Pops, one of the world’s most respected pops orchestras. In December 2014, Russell led the Cincinnati Pops on their first-ever Florida tour, and in March of 2017 he will lead the sixth Pops tour to Asia including performances in Shanghai and Taiwan. Russell also serves as Principal Pops Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, in New York, following in the footsteps of Marvin Hamlisch and Doc Severinsen. His recent collaborations include Aretha Franklin, Amy Grant and Vince Gill, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Michael McDonald, Ann Hampton Callaway, George Takei, Megan Hilty, Steve Martin, Edie Brickell and the Steep Canyon Rangers, Brian Wilson and Jason Alexander.

On the Live by Request concept Russell asks “Why does the conductor get all fun? Now YOU get to choose YOUR favourite orchestral hits in real time with your own handheld device and the KWS. From waltzes and sing-alongs, to Hollywood blockbusters and rousing finales, our Orchestra will have a menu of delectable popular classics from which you create the musical feast!”

LIVE BY REQUEST runs January 20 and 21 at 8 pm at the Centre In the Square, 101 Queen St. N. in Kitchener. Tickets can be purchased online at kwsymphony.ca or by calling 519-745-4711 or 888-745-4717.
