Don’t Forget The Popcorn! It’s Two Nights At The Movies With The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony in February and March

The KWS is going to the movies this February and March for the next two Pops series concerts with Music From The Movies on February 24 and 25, followed by Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times on March 31 and April 1.

Music From The Movies is led by KWS Assistant Conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser, and features iconic scores from prolific film composers James Horner, Michael Giacchino, and Alan Silvestri. The program will include music from Hollywood favourites like Apollo 13, Titanic, Forrest Gump, Jurassic World, UP! and more!

“Featuring Music from your favourite movies, this concert showcases the compositions of Alan Silvestri, Michael Giacchino and James Horner, three of Hollywood’s top writers,” commented Bartholomew-Poyser. “The KWS plays Star Trek, Titanic, Alien, Up, Ratatouille, Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Castaway and more! Come and hear the music behind the success of these Hollywood Blockbusters.”

Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times is an iconic film written by, directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin featuring the famous Little Tramp character as a factory worker on the advent of the industrial revolution. The KWS will provide the soundtrack to this hilarious film while it is shown on the big screen, complete with timely sound effects and Chaplin’s one of a kind physical comedy.

Modern Times is led by American conductor Timothy Brock who specializes in concert works of the early twentieth century and live performances of silent film. His work on the Charlie Chaplin scores began in 1998 when the Chaplin estate commissioned him to restore the illustrious score to Modern Times. He has since then restored twelve Chaplin silent feature and short scores. These scores include City Lights (1931), The Gold Rush (1924), and The Circus (1928).

“Seeing MODERN TIMES live is an incredibly unique experience, both musically and in cinematic terms,” commented Brock. “After opening up the five dusty boxes at the Chaplin estate in 1999 (which hadn’t seen the light of day since 1936), it has been my joy to present Chaplin’s masterpiece to audiences around the globe, just as Charlie heard it himself some eighty years ago. The music lures you into a beautiful film that is widely considered a milestone in cinematic history and film score history alike, and brings an intimate portrayal of the lonely tramp to life. Considering Chaplin wrote the score himself in 1935, seeing (and hearing) this score with live orchestra is an opportunity shared by few, and it is my pleasure to bring it to the KWS.”
