The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Ends The 2016/17 Season With The World Famous Barra MacNeils
The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony welcomes back world renowned Cape Breton family singers the Barra MacNeils for a night steeped in Celtic tradition as they perform songs from their nearly 30 year career on June 2 and 3 at 8 pm at Centre In The Square. Led by Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser in his final concert as Assistant Conductor of the KWS, it will feature the Barra MacNeils performing some of their hits alongside the Orchestra, including My Heart’s in the Highlands, Darling Be Home Soon and Caledonia, showcasing their multi-instrumental skill and precise step-dancing.
The Barra MacNeils are Kyle (vocals, guitar, violin, mandolin), Lucy (vocals, bodhran, Celtic harp, fiddle, step-dancing), Sheumas (keyboards, piano, bodhran, fiddle, bouzouki, vocals), Stewart (vocals, accordion, tin whistle, flute, bouzouki, guitar, step-dancing), Boyd (mandolin, fiddle, guitar, banjo, percussion, step-dancing) and Jamie Gatti (bass). As a group, the MacNeil siblings are widely regarded as one of the greatest live concert acts in the Celtic world. Hailing from Sydney Mines, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, the family group is deeply rooted in Celtic music, culture, dance, language and history. Their numerous critically acclaimed recordings have included their own original songs as well as tried and true standards, both instrumental and vocal.
Following his three years as Assistant Conductor of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser has been appointed Artist in Residence and Community Ambassador by Symphony Nova Scotia for the 2017/18 concert season. Of his appointment Bartholomew-Poyser commented, “I’m very excited to be joining the Symphony Nova Scotia team in this new capacity. The city of Halifax is growing and it has huge plans for growth over the next decade, and we at the Symphony want to grow along with it.” In this new role Bartholomew-Poyser will help Symphony Nova Scotia build relationships with a variety of communities and schools, and lead conversations around broadly-based cultural engagement. He will be back to guest conduct a number of concerts in the KWS’ 2017/18 season.
“We are so thrilled to be returning to perform with the KWS,” commented Stewart MacNeil. “The memory of our last concert is still vivid. It is such an honour to be asked back to perform with this accomplished orchestra. These shows are always amazing!”
