Edwin Outwater Takes His Final Bow As Music Director Of The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony

After ten seasons as Music Director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Edwin Outwater conducts his final concert with Grand Finale: Edwin’s Farewell on May 26 & 27 at 8 pm at Centre in the Square. The concert features Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, “Titan”, one of the most moving and powerful works for large orchestra. Opening the concert is the world premiere of a new composition by Canadian musician Richard Reed Parry, Outwater Fanfare, written specially for this concert as a parting gift. Also featured is the Grand Philharmonic Choir and Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto performing John Adams’ Harmonium, based on poetry by Emily Dickinson.

Edwin Outwater concludes his tenure as Music Director, having transformed the Orchestra into a leading institution both nationally and internationally, presenting works that showcase innovative artistic leadership. Through this leadership Outwater has been an ardent champion of new music and cross-cultural and interdisciplinary collaboration, making him a visionary programmer with a gift for bringing context to the concert hall. At the end of the 2016-17 season, Outwater will assume the distinguished title of Music Director Laureate. Outwater also serves as Director of Summer Concerts at the San Francisco Symphony (SFS), and was recently appointed Artistic Director of the Eastern Sierra Symphony, a summer festival in Mammoth Lakes, California. As the only guest artist invited to curate a third consecutive season of Summer concerts at the SFS, Outwater returns to help lead the trailblazing series SoundBox in the SFS’s new nightclub-style performance space, and curates and conducts the Music for Families series.

Of his composition Richard Reed Parry commented, “Outwater Fanfare is a short and intense burst of over the top emotion, for symphony orchestra. The piece begins at its own apex – a loud, highly melodic and dramatic big-screen moment of conflict in full swing.  As the climax subsides, it leaves us with a more peaceful, tentative moment of calm, open possibilities. Outwater Fanfare was commissioned by the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony for Edwin Outwater’s final concert as conductor with them.”

“This concert contains all the ingredients I want my tenure at the KWS to be known for,” commented Outwater. “It begins with a world premiere by a Canadian composer (Richard Reed Parry’s Outwater Fanfare, written for yours truly); continues with a journey into new musical territory for the KWS as we play John Adams’s epic Harmonium; and concludes with Mahler’s glorious Symphony No. 1, a work both nostalgic and forward-looking.”
