KWS Youth Orchestra Celebrates 50 Years with Alumni Concert

The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Youth Orchestra celebrates its 50th anniversary this season, and will mark the occasion November 26 at 2 pm at Centre In The Square with a special concert featuring alumni from the last 50 years. During the summer of 2016 a call went out to alumni to invite them to celebrate this milestone by participating in the concert. The program includes Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé and Montagues and Capulets from the Romeo and Juliet Suite, and Chopin’s Andante Spianato et Grande Polonaise Brillante. Approximately 40 alumni will perform alongside members of the current Youth Orchestra ensemble for Montagues and Capulets.

From its beginnings in 1966 as the Kitchener-Waterloo Junior Symphony, the KWS Youth Orchestra Program (YOP) has grown into a nationally-recognized orchestral training program for young musicians. With 5 distinct ensembles, the YOP offers training for musicians of all levels and includes youth ages 5-22. These five ensembles consist of: Preludium Strings (Junior level string ensemble), Youth Strings (intermediate level string ensemble), Youth Sinfonia (advanced level string ensemble), the Youth Concert Band (intermediate to advanced level) and the Youth Orchestra (advanced level symphony orchestra). The Youth Orchestra also includes a group known as the “Historically Informed Performers” or H.I.P., performing works in a historically accurate way. In addition, YOP runs a Chamber Music Program under the tutelage of KWS musicians.

“Many of us have fond memories of making music in our youth,” commented Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser, KWS Assistant Conductor and Conductor of the Senior Youth Orchestra. “For decades, the KWS Youth Orchestra Program has nurtured young musicians with experiences to foster a lifelong love of music. Come celebrate with us and the many YOP alumni who have already signed up to attend this event. The young people who helped start the YOP will play side by side with the young people who are continuing it – it is going to be heart-warming and tremendous. The piece we are playing, Montagues and Capulets from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, is an audience favourite, featured in movies and commercials worldwide!”
