K-W Symphony Baroque & Beyond Series Begins With A Tour of Italy and A Baroque Christmas Celebration

The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony opens the 2017/18 Baroque & Beyond Series in October with A Tour of Italy in Waterloo on Wednesday, October 25 at 8 pm at First United Church.  Then, in November, the KWS presents an intimate Christmas celebration with Christmastide—A Baroque Christmas on Wednesday, November 22 at 8 pm at First United Church.  Both concerts will also be presented in Guelph and Cambridge.

A Tour of Italy, led by conductor Matthew Jones and curated by KWS Concertmaster Bénédicte Lauzière and Principal Bass Ian Whitman, features some of Italy’s most prolific composers including Rossini, Vivaldi, Respighi and Gabrieli. Rossini’s Sonata No. 5 opens the concert, followed by one of Vivaldi’s L’estro Armonico concertos for two violins, cello and strings. Ending the concert is Bottesini’s Gran duo concertante, a virtuosic duo for violin and bass that showcases the talent of co-curator’s Bénédicte Lauzière and Ian Whitman.

Of the concert program and final piece Ian Whitman commented, “The composers featured on this program span of 400 years of history and come from different regions of the country that gifted us opera and the concerto. I’m particularly looking forward to the big finish: a virtuosic duo for solo violin and double bass by Verdi’s pal, Giovanni Bottesini.”

Christmastide—A Baroque Christmas, co-curated by KWS musicians Martha Kalyniak and Roxolana Toews, is led by Ivars Taurins of Tafelmusik and features vocalist Ellen McAteer in an intimate Christmas celebration. The concert includes Torelli’s Christmas Concerto, excerpts from J.S Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and selections from Handel’s Messiah. Traditional Christmas carols will also be featured, led by vocalist Ellen McAteer.

About the concert, Martha Kalyniak and Roxolana Toews commented, “At times, inspiration comes unexpectedly. Indeed for us, the spark came from a single candle lit at a previous Baroque concert. Being passionate about all things past, our imaginations took us back to a time of churches filled with beautiful music, festive greenery and the warm glow of candlelight. Join us for an evening celebrating the joys of the Christmas season of yesteryear.”

Tickets for all concerts are $36 for adults and $15 for students and can be purchased online at kwsymphony.ca or by calling 519-745-4711 or 888-745-4717.
