Rising Star Pianist Rémi Geniet Makes His Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Debut to Open the 2017/18 Signature Series

Rising star pianist Rémi Geniet opens the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Signature Series with Mozart and Dvořák’s New World on October 13 and 14 at 8 pm at the Centre in the Square. Led by award-winning conductor Mei-Ann Chen, this concert features Mozart’s expansive and triumphant Piano Concerto No. 25 and Dvořák’s popular Symphony No. 9 New World. Also featured is Toboggan! Sesquie for Canada’s 150th, a piece co-commissioned by the TSO and the KWS by accomplished Canadian composer Darren Fung, as well as Aqua, Juno-award winning Canadian composer Vivian Fung’s piece inspired by Chicago’s Aqua tower skyscraper.

Innovation, imagination, passion and dynamism are the hallmarks of conductor Mei-Ann Chen. Acclaimed for infusing orchestras with energy, enthusiasm and high-level music-making, she is Music Director of the Chicago Sinfonietta, and Artistic Director and Conductor of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Summer Festival. This will be Chen’s first appearance with the KWS.

Rémi Geniet is fast establishing himself as one of the most prominent pianists of his generation. He is Laureate of numerous international competitions, notably the second prize-winner at the 2013 Queen Elisabeth International Piano Competition at the age of twenty and the youngest prize-winner of the Bonn International Beethoven Competition. Geniet makes his debut with the KWS for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25.

“Old world meets new world in this inspiring concert of well-known melodies and pulsating rhythms,” commented Chen. “Two exciting works by contemporary Canadian composers Vivian Fung and Darren Fung provide an intriguing contrast to Dvořák’s New World Symphony, while Mozart’s Piano Concerto provides a wonderful journey to the past featuring rising star pianist, Rémi Geniet, in his KWS debut.”

MOZART & DVOŘÁK’S NEW WORLD runs Oct 13 & Oct 14 at 8 pm at the Centre In the Square, 101 Queen St. N. in Kitchener. Tickets can be purchased online at kwsymphony.ca or by calling 519-745-4711 or 888-745-4717.
