To me the Beethoven 4th piano concerto has an abundance of ideas, atmospheres and characters that make it unique among Beethoven’s works. It is also a piece that is very difficult technically because the pianist must be extremely flexible to adapt to the music. As usual with him, all the runs and difficult passages are about music and character only, never about the instrument or virtuosity per se. So one always needs great technical skills, I would say very superior skills, to be able to bring about the music, because technique is about expression. I do look forward very much to play it with KWS in February.
